The language department of The Gap State High School currently offers Chinese and German as an additional language in Years 7 to 12. We know that humans are wired to share stories and that language acquisition occurs through first listening, then speaking, reading and writing.
In our Junior program, we engage students by immersing them in core language from the beginning of the program. This helps them participate in their stories and accumulate language more readily. This extends in our Senior program that aims to create fluent, proficient and confident communicators.
Through the study of Chinese or German, students will:
- Develop curiosity about and appreciation for different cultures and perspectives.
- Build intercultural understanding and global awareness.
- Strengthen communication, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
- Develop confidence, resilience and adaptability through learning in new and unfamiliar contexts.
- Enhance future study, travel and career opportunities in an increasingly interconnected world.
In Years 7 to 8 students study four semesters of Chinese or German.
In Years 9 to 12 students can elect to continue their language studies.
