Homestay Program
We currently have 31 international students from countries such as Vietnam, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan and Colombia living with homestay families and attending The Gap State High School.
Being away from their home country can be challenging for young people.
To ensure that our students feel safe, supported and able to focus on their studies, our staff team works closely with both students and homestay families throughout their stay.
Some of our homestay families have more than 20 years of experience, while others are hosting for the first time.
To support new families, we provide an induction process and information sessions before students arrive.
We also organise an annual gathering where students and homestay families come together, helping to build a strong and welcoming community.
If you have a spare room and are interested in hosting an international student, we would be very happy to hear from you.
Homestay at The Gap State High School
As a homestay host, you play an important role in shaping the experiences and memories of international students during their time in Queensland. Many of our hosts build warm, long‑lasting connections with students and their families across the world.
Your main responsibility is to provide a safe, welcoming and supportive home environment where students can focus on their studies and adjust to life in Australia.
Ideally, homestay hosts live within a reasonable and direct commute to the school. All adults in the household are required to hold a current Blue Card.
What you provide
Homestay hosts offer students:
- a clean, inclusive and friendly household where they can experience everyday life in Queensland
- a private bedroom with a desk, chair and storage for their personal belongings and study materials
- three nutritious meals each day, along with access to healthy snacks
- guidance on travelling to and from school and for school‑related activities
We support both new and experienced hosts through induction, information sessions and ongoing assistance. Our school also holds an annual gathering for students and homestay families to help strengthen our community.
