Extra-curricular

The Gap State High School offers many opportunities for students to get involved in extra-curricular activities. As well as extension activities for core subjects, after hours practices for music ensembles, bands and choirs and our award-winning outdoor education programs there are many other activities to be involved with. For example:

The Gap Technical crew

The Gap Technical crew is a select group of Senior students who work ‘behind the scenes’ at The Gap State High School.  These students learn to operate the school’s lighting, sound and vision systems and run these facilities for a large array of school, extra-curricular and community functions.

RACI Titration competition

This involves practices at lunchtimes and attending competitions on Saturdays at University of Queensland/Griffith University.

Volleyball

The school prepares teams for the Queensland Schools Cup (senior and junior) and the Australian Schools Cup. In 2014 the new sports hall will enable more teams to practice and prepare for these competitions.

Rotary Interact

This is a student group that supports school, local and global community initiatives. This year they have been fundraising for 'Shelter Boxes' - large containers of food and medical supplies that can also be used as emergency shelter during natural disasters.

Debating and Public Speaking

Our school actively participates in a range of public speaking competitions including Lions Youth of the Year, Rostrum Public Speaking and interschool debating across all year levels. Students have successfully made the finals in a number of these activities over the years.

OptiMinds and National Academic Competitions

Students across all year levels participate in a number of academic competitions involving a range of curriculum areas such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Science, English, share market, computing as well as the integrated problem solving competition OptiMinds.

Chess Club

Chess is played by students both within the school and at competition level.

Instrumental and Chorale Programs

The Instrumental Music Program has been a great success over the years and is continuing to grow. Through weekly lessons and rehearsals, music camps and tours, performances at school and within the community, our students have many opportunities to develop and demonstrate their excellent music talents.

Choral music at The Gap State High School continues to grow in its strength of numbers and quality of singing.

The vocal ensemble features all ranges of voices, from Bass to Soprano, and currently incorporates students from Years 7 to 12. Their performances range from music nights and special school events to combined schools community events. On occasions the Year 11s and 12s also form a classroom music ensemble in relation to their studies and have been known to perform on assembly and at school concerts.

Excursions to China and our Ski Trip

Each year the school offers educational tours to China for language students and a ski trips for all students. These trips provide many memorable experiences in students' lives at our school.

Arts Programs

Tula Festival, Musical (every second year), Talent Quest and Cabaret Night are part of The Arts department's activities during the year. All students are encouraged to be involved in these activities. We believe they provide an important avenue to share their talents with the rest of the school community.

Sports

A community based sports program complements the school based, interschool and district competitions that students can be involved while attending The Gap State High School. This involves students participating as a member of The Gap State High School team in local sporting competitions during week nights and/or weekends.

Study Enhancement Programs

Senior students have the opportunity to undertake enhancement courses in their study areas outside of school hours. Students pay a fee to take advantage of these courses that are held during each term.

Chaplaincy Chat Group

A small group of students meet each week with the school Chaplains and undertake a variety of youth orientated activities. These have a Christian and community focus. Meetings are held after school. All students and staff are always welcome.
