Positive Education

What is Positive Education?
The Gap State High School’s Wellbeing Framework is informed by the Science of Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology is a branch of the science of psychology that looks at working with people to enhance their life experience.  The science researches interventions around enhancing our subjective wellbeing, and ultimately aims to help us to live optimally and flourish achieving a life going well.

Positive Education refers to the application of the science of wellbeing with best teaching practice to achieve and support individuals, schools and communities to flourish.

As a Positive Education school, wellbeing is at the heart of what we do.

At The Gap SHS, we are committed to fostering a safe, welcoming and nurturing learning environment where each student feels valued and has the opportunity to grow enhancing their wellbeing.

Based on the work of the world-renowned psychologist Professor Martin Seligman, Positive Education uses the model below to build on the 6 elements that contribute to a person’s wellbeing. 

The PERMAH model is used to define the six elements that form the foundation of a happy and flourishing life.

Positive Education is embedded within the curriculum, in every subject and year level, it is a focus of our GOALS program and Roll classes from year 7 -12, it underpins our policies and procedures and it impacts on how we relate to our students and each other.

Principles of wellbeing are taught explicitly to our students, teaching and non-teaching staff, parents and the wider community.

Character strengths

The twin pillars of character strengths and mindfulness are important components of wellbeing at The Gap SHS.

Dr Martin Seligman and Dr Christopher Peterson identified 24 character strengths that we all possess. However, some come more naturally to us and are identified as our top strengths. A top character strength is defined as a positive quality or talent that is energising, we choose to use and we perform well at (Waters, 2017).

Character strengths exist within each of us, they can be developed and provide the framework for a strengths-based approach when building relationships. 

Understanding who a student is, what their top character strengths are directs the conversation to: 

·         What they are good at

·         What strengths they can draw on in situations

·         What strengths they can develop to display their “best self”

When we take a strengths-based approach we can look at what is right and what is possible rather than what is wrong.


Mindfulness is a practice that allows us to be fully present, to be aware of where and what we’re doing and not to be overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Research shows that practicing mindfulness can reduce stress and improve memory.
