Science, Technology and Engineering and Maths (STEM)

STEM is an exciting and evolving field. STEM knowledge and skills allows students to make a positive difference in the world through innovation and creativity. Many of the fastest growing occupations and emerging industries require STEM expertise. STEM uses and develops critical thinking and reasoning to solve problems.

The STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) course is offered as a separate entity to Years 9 and 10 students at The Gap SHS andstudents can choose STEM as a specialist elective.. The emphasis is on extending understanding and inquiry through experimentation and project work.

The course was designed for students willing to take risks, challenge themselves academically and engage in Higher Order Thinking skills while making genuine links across multiple disciplines.

The Gap High’s partnership with QUT’s Step-Up program has seen our STEM students access scientific researchers and QUT’s STEM Studio laboratory facilities. Such experiences cannot usually be provided at the school level.  Students have not only met the challenges courageously, but also displayed a commitment to academic excellence. The course commenced in 2014 with one Year 9 class and demand for inclusion in 2015 increased by over 30%. This trend has continued for 2016 and retention rates remain at 100%. Another pleasing aspect has been the increase in the number of female applicants such that half of the 2016 Year 9 STEM group will be girls.
